ABOUT THE SHOW
Join us for a night of classic RomCom shenanigans as we navigate one of Shakespeare’s most chaotic comedies! In “Twelfth Night, or What you will,” days and nights are spent falling desperately in and out of love, pulling outrageous practical jokes, jamming to 2000s bangers, and having a riotously good time. This romp of a show plays on many of the themes that have made Shakespeare’s work echo through the ages: mistaken identity, practical jokes, the pious versus the ridiculous, friendship, revelry, and, of course, the power and playfulness of love.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
(The pronouns listed for each role indicate the character's pronouns, but they are in no way meant to limit submissions to individuals who use the same pronouns.)
VIOLA (she/her): The protagonist of our tale. Think spunky leading lady who doesn’t fit in the mold.
Viola finds herself shipwrecked in a new land and disguises herself as a man (Cesario) to gain employment with the Duke Orsino, as her options as a woman are extremely limited. While in his employ she is asked to woo Olivia on his behalf, but she falls in love with Orsino herself. She is a witty, highly capable, intelligent woman who knows how to make things happen.
ORSINO (he/him): Our quintessential Rom-Com leading man. Orsino believes himself to be a lover, but is mostly just in love with the idea of being in love. He’s the product of the world he’s in as well, trying to live up to the patriarchal idea of “wooing the ladies.” An unlikely friendship with “Cesario” (Viola) changes the way he sees love.
OLIVIA (she/her): A countess, who has sworn off of romantic love for the time being after the death of her father and brother. She is disinterested in Orsino’s attempts at wooing her (she sees right through him) but ends up falling for Viola disguised as Cesario. She is smart, and can use both her stern power as a lady of wealth and her cutting humor as tools when she chooses.
FESTE (she/he/they): Like many of Shakespeare’s “Fools,” Feste is perhaps the wisest, most observant, most knowledgeable character on the stage, but chooses humor as the tool for their wisdom. Will also play OFFICER 2.
MARIA (she/they): Olivia’s waiting-gentlewoman. She runs the household and cannot stand Malvolio’s puritanical self-righteousness. She lays the groundwork for the scheme to make a fool of Malvolio.
TOBY (she/they): A wily troublemaker. Loves a turn of phrase and turning the gears of pranks. Knows how to make her/theirself appear more foolish than they are when it serves their devices. Will play to the audience in moments, she/they are in on the joke that love can be. In the duo of Toby/Sir Andrew Toby understands the joke, and Sir Andrew is the joke.
SIR ANDREW (he/they): Sidekick to Toby, rarely sober. Trying to get in Olivia’s good graces but distracted by the party. In the duo of Toby/Sir Andrew Toby understands the joke, and Sir Andrew is the joke.
MALVOLIO (he/him): The very picture of self-righteousness, Malvolio believes himself to be above everyone and everything. He takes himself entirely seriously, even when he is the butt of the joke. Essentially, he is every insufferable dude that has looked down on anything others do and originated the “mansplain.” Will also play PRIEST.
SEBASTIAN (he/they): Viola’s twin brother. Shipwrecked and washes up in the same town as his sister but doesn’t know if she’s alive. He is earnest and courageous. Will also play VALENTINE and OFFICER 1.
ANTONIO (she/he/they): Another sea captain who is loyal to Sebastian. Will also play CURIO.
FABIAN (she/he/they): A member of Olivia’s household who gets roped into the pranks of Maria, Toby, and Sir Andrew. Will also play CAPTAIN.
