Kelsay + Morales Company is currently accepting video submissions for the staged reading of BEACON STREET,

A New Musical, directed by Kenny Howard, produced by The Renaissance Theatre Company.

SEEKING: A diverse company of Non-Union, Musical Theatre Singer/Actors who are comfortable with folk style
and strong storytellers. Performers of all ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, and physical abilities are strongly encouraged to submit. Actors must be local to Orlando, FL or Central Florida.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Nanci Griffith was an American singer-songwriter and Grammy-winning artist. In her forty-plus-year career, she wrote more than 250 songs and released 24 albums. Her magnificent storytelling song style has been woven into a musical story of the best kind of family; the one we choose. Miss Rita has opened her home and heart to a dozen kids over the decades and some of them are returning to celebrate her 90th birthday. Back in West Texas, they find familiar places, old faces, and open books missing pages.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

BOBBY: 30’s - Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. A gay frustrated writer. His personal and professional life is always in turmoil. He returns to his hometown after more than a decade to find the wreckage of his past. TENOR

SYLVIA: Mid/late 50’s - Female-Identifying, White. B-List actress who loves men, booze, and herself. She leaves a distinct impression wherever she goes. ALTO

MISS RITA: 60’s-70’s plays late 80’s, Female-Identifying, White. A beloved wise woman who opens her heart and home to the misfits. She knows everyone, everyone knows her, but no one really knows her at all. ALTO/MEZZO

ABIGAIL: Late 20’s-30’s – Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Caretaker and friend of Miss Rita. She takes the path of least resistance until the path takes her. ALTO

LENA: 14-22 plays 17, Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Smart, fun, angst-ridden teen who is the product of irresponsible parents. She wants to be anywhere but where she’s standing.

THE GENERAL: 50’s-60’s, Male-Identifying, White. Homeless man, simple, kind, and likable. His life is filled with wonder. TENOR

 

ALICE: 30’s-40’s, Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Wife of Herb. Salt of the earth woman who loves her husband and their land. ALTO/MEZZO

 

HERB: 30’s-50’s, Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. Loyal and steady generational farmer. A good man dealing with hard times. BARITONE/TENOR

 

STEVEN: 30’s, Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. Former jock, sweetheart of a guy, and a family man. Questions the choices he has made as he rethinks his past. TENOR

 

MAGGIE: Mid/late 50’s - FEMALE, any ethnicity. Old best friend of Sylvia. Likes the simplicity of her life because it’s the consequence of her secrets. ALTO

 

HAYNES: 40’s-50’s, Male-Identifying, any ethnicity. A businessman. A womanizer. A dick.

 

HAZEL: 20’s-30s, Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Wife of Haynes. Stands by her man and has the footprints to prove it. ALTO/MEZZO

 

DEBBIE: 20’s-30’s, Female-Identifying, any ethnicity. Ordinary, pregnant wife of Steven (doubles as TOWNPERSON)

 

CABDRIVER: Male-Identifying, any age, any ethnicity. (doubles as TOWNSPERSON)

 

TOWNSPEOPLE: Any gender-identity. Any age. Any ethnicity.
